Apple offers $999 iMac for schools
The hardware in question is available to anyone purchasing equipment for an educational institution and comes attached to a price of $999 USD—a significant drop when compared to the $1,199 USD tag attached to the current cheapest iMac sold by Apple through conventional channels.
The education-centric iMac comes with a spacious 21.5-inch display, a dual-core 3.1 GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 2GBs of RAM, optional expansion up to 8GBs, a 250GB hard drive, AMD Radeon HD graphics (6750M), FaceTime HD and support for Mini DisplayPort.
Although a saving of $200 USD may not seem like a great deal of cash, any educational institute prepared to buy in bulk to cater for vast sways of students will certainly feel the benefit.
This isn’t the only iMac that Apple has aimed at schools and follows on from a slightly more capable (and more expensive) quad-core Core i5 variant (2.5GHz) that comes with 4GBs of RAM as standard, a 500GB hard drive, and a buying price of $1,149 USD.
Whether you cynically view it as ‘shamelessly attracting future consumers’ or a noble exercise ‘to help boost education standards’, Cupertino-based Apple Inc. has this week revealed a new iMac computer for schools.
